CN 4705
Title:  CN 4705
Description:  A CN local crosses Washington St. as it emerges from U.S. Paper Mills Corp. at Menasha, WI on 2 Sep. '19. This mill began production in 1891 as the John Strange Paper Co. It was purchased by Menasha Corp. in 1969 and renamed John Strange Paperboard Div. It was sold to U.S. Papers Corp. in 1981. It was sold to Sonoco ca. 2002. I’m not sure who these rails originally belonged to, the MILW, SOO, and C&NW all had access to this small, mostly industrial island for many years. This island was formed when the Fox River Navigation Canal was excavated ca. 1856 (when the lock was completed). Boy, did I ever receive some suspicious glares from some paranoid employees while I was standing on the public sidewalk, next to the public thoroughfare, waiting for the locomotive to emerge from this facility.

CN 4705
Title:  CN 4705
Description:  A CN local parallels the Fox River Navigation Canal and River St. as it approaches the junction with the former joint MILW/SOO rails at Menasha, WI on 2 Sep. '19. Simply Incredible Foods, 198 River St., looms in the background. Simply Incredible Foods purchased the defunct Menasha Municipal Utilities (Menasha Utilities) plant in Jun. '14. I’m not sure who these rails originally belonged to, the MILW, SOO, and C&NW all had access to this small, mostly industrial island for many years. This island was formed when the Fox River Navigation Canal was excavated ca. 1856 (when the lock was completed).

CN 4705 and IC 9605
Title:  CN 4705 and IC 9605
Description:  A CN local parallels Ehlers Rd. and approaches Towmen Rd. as it starts to transition from the former SOO rails to the former C&NW rails as it heads northeast at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016) on 20 Sep. '19. Local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails.

IC 9605 and CN 4705
Title:  IC 9605 and CN 4705
Description:  A CN local bisects the intersection of N. Appleton St. and W. Packard St./W. North St. as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 23 Sep. '19. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna. There used to be at least five tracks crossing N. Appleton St., only the main line remains. The C&NW freight house stood just out-of-frame to the right, a team track remained for quite a while after the building was removed. The C&NW's downtown passenger depot, one of three in Appleton, would be visible to the left of the lead locomotive if it still stood.

Title:  CN 4705
Description:  A CN local approaches the station sign and Lande St. as it heads northeast with 5 cars via former C&NW rails at De Pere, WI, on 26 Oct. '19. I'm not sure why the station sign stands here, the depot stood at Grant St., about 2,500' to the north. This portion of De Pere was originally West De Pere until 1890.

CN 9515, GTW 5812, CN 4705
Title:  CN 9515, GTW 5812, CN 4705
Description:  A heavily powered CN local crosses W. 2nd St. as it prepares to set out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 15 Nov. '19. Local would continue on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. Carter's Caboose, 1428 W. 2nd St., a small, old, rail side tavern, is partially visible at left. It dates to at least 1887, when it was a grocery store operated by Peter Leininger. By 1901 it was a sample room (saloon) operated by John Sigl. By ‘30 it was a soft drink establishment owned by Hubert J. Merkel and August F. Brandt (Prohibition was still in effect). By ’36 it was a tavern operated by Albert Giesen, owned by Mrs. Gretchen Merkel. By ’38 it was Bob’s Tavern, still owned by Mrs. Merkel. It was the Junction Tavern from at least ’43-’71, still owned by Mrs. Merkel until at least ’60 (there were at least two different owners between ’67-’71). At some point in the ‘70s it became Pete’s Junction (possibly Palomino Pete’s Junction). It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the ‘90s (owned by Joanne M. ‘Nettie’ Nett). I haven’t learned how long it has been Carter’s Caboose.
