Crossing Forster Drive |
Description: |
Although the original 8" Griswold lamps were replaced with the ubiquitous oversized L.E.D.s within the last few years, this crossing still retains its wide-pedestal gate mechanisms which were a common installation on both the C&NW and Milwaukee Road. Similar sets on E. Johnson Street, Baldwin Street, and Sherman Avenue have been replaced over the course of the last decade. |

This crossing, once solidly in the rural area between Waunakee and Dane, is being overtaken by suburban sprawl. |

Cresting the hill |
Description: |
Despite the uphill gradient here and a fairly healthy train for the line in 2021, the power doesn't work too hard at 10 MPH. 15 years ago, most of this line east of Rock Springs was still good for 25. |

L724 passes the WSOR Burro crane |
Description: |
The Burro set seems to be permanently stored on this siding in Cross Plains, as it's always here when I go by. Never thought to include it in a shot with a train until now. I broke off the chase of L469 after it cleared Olin Avenue to catch up with this, the other train I had a heads up on for this day. |

Crossing Center Street |
Description: |
Like nearly every crossing on the WSOR by this point in time, the Milwaukee Road or C&NW-era 8" incandescent lamps on the signals have been replaced with 12" LEDs. However, this crossing has not yet had the entire signals replaced with new gated ones, and the uniquely small, high-pitched Western Railroad Supply Co. "mini" mechanical bell remains. It seems the Milwaukee Road was a fairly heavy user of these bells, with at least two or three remaining on all of WSOR's ex-MILW lines out of Madison until the signal replacements began in earnest under Watco ownership in the mid-2010s. |

Rounding the curve past the Old Feed Mill Restaurant |
Description: |
More Milwaukee Road-style switch stands are evident in this shot. WSOR has begun to replace them around their system under Watco ownership, but the Prairie Sub remains a stronghold for now. The switch the power is on is the west leg of the wye for the Sauk City branch, out of service except for car storage since the Wisconsin River bridge was partially demolished due to shifting piers in 1998. |

Rocking and rolling toward the "Blynn Bend" |
Description: |
Finally got my 25 MPH runby and called it a chase...the crew said on the radio they were going to park it in Spring Green, anyway. Most of the slow orders which had been repealed the last time I chased a train out on this line prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, seem to have been re-instated. |
