UPY 855 |
Description: |
UPY 855 was delivered to Missouri Pacific as an SD40-2 but the lack of dynamic brakes made this locomotive unsuitable for UP's mountainous terrain. Instead of being removed from the roster UP rebuilt this EMD into an SD38-2 along with several other former Mopac SD40-2s and assigned them to yard and hump duty. In this photo a former SD40-2 turned SD38-2 and an SD60 combine their 5,800 horsepower to move a long line of freight cars in Davidson Yard. |

An SD70M sporting both a new plow and truck struts crests a hill with an eastbound manifest train. Of the EMD 70 Series locomotives, the FIRE equipped versions are my personal favorite due to the sharp edges of the nose. After this model came the SD70ACe and the styling went downhill faster than this freight. Note the sagging frame of the trailing AC4460CW. |

Delivered to Union Pacific in January 1989, this locomotive has worn the same number for the railroad that ordered her 25 years ago. While UP has auctioned off some members of the C40-8 fleet, the lucky ones still in active service seem to be turning up everywhere in every type of service. Since delivery 9314 now sports cab air conditioning but so far has managed to elude yellow frame striping except for one door under the cab giving this GE two shields. Note the new truck struts on the front and rear and the missing panel near the exhaust stack. |

EMD delivered this 3,800 horsepower road unit to Union Pacific in June 1989 as 6210 and in September 2001 became 2365 when new GEs arrived. Note how the red stripe curves down instead of straight across the front of the locomotive as on other wide nosed power. |

BNSF 2841 |
Description: |
This former Santa Fe GP39-2 now wears a BNSF assigned number and a fairly clean coat of H1 paint. Delivered by EMD to Santa Fe as GP39-2 3636 in February 1975, to ATSF 3136 in anticipation of the SPSF merger in July 1985 then back to 3636 in July 1986, In November 1987 was released as GP39-2u after rebuilding and assigned 3437, keeping this number until the end of Santa Fe. A decade later in November 1997 this locomotive entered the paint shop and emerged wearing BNSF H1 paint and road number 2841. Compared to a lot of other units in H2 and H3 paint, this Geep is weathering much better. Note the Omaha Orange horn behind the dynamic brake fan. |
