Trailvan and auto rack trains typically got helpers on the head end, due to the train handling tendencies of the long cars, especially on the many curves. Today an EL SD45-2 does the honors. |

Passing the station |

WEEL39(Way freight, Elmira district, based at ELmira) rolls past the ex PRR station at Horseheads on the remnant of the Pennsys Elmira Division, a line that went from Williamsport to Sodus Point on Lake Ontario. The PRR had rights on the Erie from Southport, on the south side of Elmira, to Horseheads, then regained its own line. Washouts in Pennsylvania during hurricane Agnes in 1972 spelled the end for the line. What was left was served by CR after 1976 from Elmira. |

Transfer |
Description: |
A transfer from Harrisburg to Enola approaches the west end of the bridge with 99 cars behind power not often seen by this date. The GP 10s were fairly common on locals and yard jobs, but the end cab switchers were a vanishing breed by this time. |

The more things change |
Description: |
TV 12 is eastbound across Rockville Bridge under the watchful eye of a boat full of fishermen. Today, theyd be watching double stacked containers. At the time of the photo, the ex PRR did not have the clearances for them to run there, and they were seen only on the Southern Tier, due to its generous clearances owing to Eries original 6 foot gauge. |
