CNW RSD5 1688
Title:  CNW RSD5 1688
Description:  C&NW RSD5 1688 aqt Omaha, Nebraska on April 21, 1963 photo by Lou Schmitz from the Chuck Zeiler collection. Built in April 1954 (c/n 80865) it was retired February 17, 1981. The C&NW had three RSD5's which included both a steam generator and dynamic brake option, resulting in a high short hood, and for obvious reasons was nicknamed "Hammerhead" (although technically, this was the rear of the unit, clearly "Hammerbutt" isn't any good). Its original assignment was in a pool of diesels replacing steam power on suburban trains in Chicago. It later migrated west to the "Alco Line" in southern Minnesota and South Dakota.

C&NW RSD5 1689
Title:  C&NW RSD5 1689
Description:  C&NW RSD5 1689 at Proviso, Illinois somtime in March 1981, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in April 1954 (c/n 80861), it was retired in March 1981, sold to Precision National Corporation, Mount Vernon, Illinois, re-sold to B&K Engineering in Wisconsin, re-sold to Chicago Madison & Northern Railroad as 1689, re-sold to Central Wisconsin Railroad, re-sold to Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, Cumberland, Maryland.

The C&NW bought five RSD4's (#'s 1515-1517 and 1619-1620) and ten RSD5's (#'s 1665-1677 and 1684-1690) from Alco. Of these, all the RSD4's and five RSD5's were equipped with steam generators for suburban passenger service, 1689 was so equipped as built. It appears to have acquired some sort of winterization hatch. This is probably this locomotive's retirement party.

C&NW SD9 1703
Title:  C&NW SD9 1703
Description:  Chicago & North Western Railway SD9 1703 at Proviso, Illinois on January 9, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 1703 was built in May 1954 ( c/n 19498 ) and was equipped with botha steam generator and dynamic brakes. The steam generator was removed in June 1971 and the locomotive was renumbered to 6603. I have no idea about the receptacle below the headlights. It may have provided coach lighting with power from the auxiliary generator.

Title:  C&NW SD9 1710
Description:  Chicago & North Western Railway SD9 1710 at Proviso, Illinois on February 14, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 1703 was built in May 1954 ( c/n 19505 ) and was equipped with both a steam generator and dynamic brakes. The short hood was chopped down around 1966, the steam generator was removed in August 1971 and the locomotive was renumbered to 6610. I have no idea about the receptacle below the headlights. It may have provided coach lighting with power from the auxiliary generator.

C&NW GP9 1719
Title:  C&NW GP9 1719
Description:  C&NW GP9 1719 at Proviso, Illinois on February 14, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. There appears to be a bulge of some sort on the short hood. Anyone have an explanation? This unit was equipped with a steam generator, so it is possibly related to that. Number 1719 received a chopped short hood before 1970 (obviously losing the steam generator in the process), was rebuilt and renumbered to 4326 in October 1973, retired December 12, 1988, and sold to Fox River Valley on January 12, 1989. Unusual bell for the C&NW.

Title:  C&NW GP9 1767
Description:  Chicago and North Western GP9 1767 at Proviso, Illinois on an unknown day in September 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I don't know but I think the North Western might win the award for most paint schemes. This one has no visible reporting marks, hash marks on most of the frame. and the Ball And Bar logo on the long hood. It appears the footboard will require some attention.

Title:  C&NW GP9 1772
Description:  Chicago and North Western GP9 1772 at Proviso, Illinois on an unknown day in October 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Notes at the C&NWHS site indicate that number 1772's short hood was chopped before 1970, but that did not help the fortunes of this locomotive, which was retired and scrapped in 1985.

Description:  Chicago and North Western Railway Bicentennial GP18 1776 at Des Moines, Iowa on March 6, 1976, Kodachrome by J. H. Nixon, Chuck Zeiler collection. Note the red jacket in the cab, nice touch. I would speculate that the shadow at the bottom of the frame was made by our photographer.

C&NW GP18 1777
Title:  C&NW GP18 1777
Description:  Chicago & North Western Railway GP18 1777 at Des Moines, Iowa on September 2, 1982, Kodachrome by Ken Kessler, Chuck Zeiler collection. Below the cab it is stencilled as a GP9. This might be due to the use of components from F3 trade-in's. Here is a footnote from Utahrails.net's C&NW page: Equipped with 16-567BC engines rather than normal for GP18 16-567D1 engines. Also equipped with four 3-foot radiator fans rather than two 4-foot radiator fans, as on a normal GP18. This change in design configuration is explained by the use of several components from the six 6500 class F3s that were used as direct trade-in units. At least one unit, C&NW 1779, was wrongly stenciled during its career as a GP9. Traded to EMD in June 1985, scrapped by St. Louis Auto Shredding, Madison, Ill..

C&NW H-16-66 1906
Title:  C&NW H-16-66 1906
Description:  Chicago & North Western Railway H-16-66 1906 at Proviso, Illinois on February 14, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 1906 was built in June 1956 (c/n 16L1031), the last locomotive that Fairbanks-Morse delivered to the C&NW. This unit shows the 'Phase II' styling of what became known as the 'Baby Train Master'. It has drop-equalizer trucks, a restyled carbody and radiator section (creating a steps in the running board bridged by a plate), and uses GE electrical equipment (as opposed the Westinghouse electrical equipment in the earlier style). Partial views of the 'Phase I' (Loewy) style H-16-66 can be seen on either side of 1906. The C&NW amassed a fleet of 51 H-16-66's; 25 Loewy-style, and 26 Baby Train Masters.

C&NW F7 4070A
Title:  C&NW F7 4070A
Description:  C&NW F7 4070A westbound at Wheaton, Illinois on November 1, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built for freight service in March 1949 (c/n 6604) on EMD Order E1013, it was regeared from the original 62:15 (65 mph) gear ratio to 57:20 (95 mph) gear ratio, and equipped with Cummins diesel generator set for 440VAC auxiliary power and assigned to Chicago suburban service in 1960-1961. This photo looks weird because of the leaning poles on the left, but the rest of the background is straight, so I think the poles are leaning.

C&NW F7 4099C
Title:  C&NW F7 4099C
Description:  C&NW F7 4099C in as-delivered paint at Proviso, Illinois, on February 14, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Number 4099C was built in April 1950 (c/n 10587) on EMD Order 6035, retired February 9, 1966 and traded back to EMD. Note the ATS shoe attached to the lead axle bearing.

I have a theory about those scuff marks in the dark paint below the Engineer's window. This locomotive is equipped with what was known as a "toe step", a piece of angle iron attached to the cab to allow maintenance people to walk from the cab door to the windshield by means of this step. Given the lack of grab irons between the cab door and front, I imagine a lot of maintenance people lost their footing and that's the marks of a men in trouble. The CB&Q had a similar arrangement on the Fireman's side, and also provided a grab iron mounted just below the cab window that ran the length of the toe step.

C&NW RS11 4251
Title:  C&NW RS11 4251
Description:  This end is the Front of Chicago & North Western Railway RS11 4251 at Waseca, Minnesota on August 30, 1975, Kodachrome by J. H. Nixon, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 4251 was built in March 1956 as Carolina & Northwestern (CRN) 11 (c/n 81464), the only RS11 on the Southern Railway system, of which CRN was a part. It was purchased second-hand by the C&NW from GE on December 22, 1973, retired August 9, 1983. It has one unusual feature that I cannot explain. Note the conical shape on the door just behind the radiator shutters.
