Album Info:Montana Limestone Company operates 2 former Canadian National SDF 50 units it acquired from the Dakota Valley & Western. Both units have kept thier CN numbers throughout thier careers. MLC began in the early 1900's as 'Big Horn Calcium', a company which mines high grade limestone from a quarry on the flanks of the nearby Pryor Mountain Range. The raw limestone is trucked from the quarry to the rail loadout site at Warren, MT, far from any urban buildup and just over the border from Wyoming. Warren has a lineside loading yard and is the MLC interchange with the BNSF. The 2 SDF's are captive for switching the constant traffic of open hoppers the business generates. The limestone mined here is used for processing sugar beet and in coal fired generation plant emission scrubbers, among other uses. Having seen the great photos here in RRPA from other contributors, I knew it was only a matter of time before I would have to come up myself and get some photos of these really nice looking locomotives..[All photos taken with permission of MLC staff].
