Holly. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train at HOLLY Block in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, in July of 1960. Shown here is PRR engine #8100, a BS-12 built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1954 and rated at 1,200 horsepower. It is pulling a four-car mixed-cargo freight train on the Bedford Secondary Track, and has just entered HOLLY Block on its way to the Wye Switches and the Altoona Yards. Hollidaysburg's historic "Chimney Rocks" are also visible in the distance! |

PRR 9777, EF-15A, 1965 |
Description: |
Holly. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train at HOLLY Block in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, on 07 April 1965. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #9777, #9774-B, #9840-B, and #9788. All were built by GM-EMD and are rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9777, #9774-B, and #9788 are EF-15A's and were built in 1951, but #9840-B is an EFP-15 and was built in 1952. They are pulling a 38-car westbound freight train out of the Hollidaysburg Yards. The train will pass WYE Tower, climb the Allegheny Mountains by way of the New Portage Branch and the Muleshoe Curve, and then merge with the mainline at Gallitzin. Most of the cars in this train are new 70-ton hopper cars, just produced at the PRR's Samuel Rea Shop. The cabin car is #477806. In years past, two-story HOLLY Tower was located in the grassy area between the sidewalk and the bridge over the Juniata River. Also located here was an elevated tower to operate the Bedford Street Crossing gates. |

PRR Bedford Street Crossing, 1965 |
Description: |
Holly. Here is an original telephoto view that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, during late November of 1965. Shown here is an unidentified locomotive shifting some cars at the Juniata River Railroad Bridge, just East of the Bedford Street Crossing. HOLLY Tower was located just this side of the Bridge. Beyond the Bridge at the right is the Passenger Station. Some of the Allegheny Mountains are also visible in the hazy distance. Once upon a time, this stretch of track was the original right of way for the Allegheny Portage Railroad: the journey began at the Pennsylvania Mainline Canal's Boat Basin (to the left) and proceeded West to Duncansville (to the right), Portage at the summit of the Alleghenies, then Johnstown and a return to canal and river travel all the way to Pittsburgh. |

PC HOLLY Block, 1972 |
Description: |
Holly. Here is an original photo that I took of Penn Central Railroad real estate in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, during March of 1972. Shown here is the PCs' ground-level signal marking the limit of HOLLY Block. In this photo, the tracks occupy the original right-of-way for the Allegheny Portage Railroad between Hollidaysburg and Duncansville in the distance. The Hollidaysburg Passenger Station is visible just beyond the crossing gates, but the telephone box is no longer extant! |
