Description:  Here is page one of a three-page article by Denis Connell entitled "Altoona Sunday!" It was published originally in the January 1988 issue of "Railpace Newsmagazine," page 22. Partial Caption: "Conrail SD40 helpers 6296-6290 assist restored PRR E8's 5898-5706 on a seventeen-car consist around Horseshoe Curve on November 1, 1987." From here, it's up to Gallitzin, through one tunnel, around the wye, through the New Portage Tunnel, down "The Mountain" and around the Curve to Altoona.

Description:  Here is an original 35mm color slide by M.E. Brouse that was taken just East of the 24th Street Bridge in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 1 November 1987. Shown here (R to L) are former Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5898 and #5706. Both are E-8A's built by GM-EMD and rated at 2,250 horsepower each; #5898 was constructed in March of 1951, while #5706 was built in October of 1952. At the time this photo was taken, they were owned by the Blue Mountain & Reading Railroad and are seen pulling the 17-car "Horseshoe Curve Excursion" down the Allegheny Mountains and will soon stop at the Altoona Passenger Station before returning to Hamburg.
