Paired 70 Tonners |
Description: |
The Sisseton Southern RR (SSOR) operated the former Milwaukee Road line between Sisseton and Milbank SD from 1987 to 1989. Their two GE 70 tonners were sitting in the Dakota Southern's Chamberlain SD yard in July 1993. 75 was originally built for Iowa's Charles City Western and then worked for the Mariana & Blountstown in Florida before ending up in the Dakotas. The large, obviously homebuilt plow is a nice touch. |

M&StL Depot, Aberdeen |
Description: |
The M&StL's westernmost line ran from Watertown to Leola SD. They built this nice looking brick depot at Aberdeen to serve the largest city on the route but were never really ever to compete with the Milwaukee Road as far as passenger traffic to Minneapolis. Their daily train to Minneapolis was reduced by 1945 to a mixed which itself was off the schedule by 1950. CNW pulled up the former Louie rails in 1969. |

Canton SD; Looking East |
Description: |
At one time Canton SD was an important junction for the Milwaukee Road, with two lines crossing here with routes to Sioux Falls, Sioux City, Madison/Chicago and Mitchell/Rapid City radiating outwards. BNSF and DAIR now provide the service and the eastern route is abandoned. This view looks over the site of the depot, which was moved to another location in town and restored. |
