Southern Railway roof-hatch box cars (AAR type LC) were easy to identify because of their yellow doors, and here was SOU 32419 in New Orleans on 2 October 1973. The lettering on its door read ROOF HATCH CAR FOR CLAY LOADING / ONLY RETURN PROMPTLY WHEN EMPTY / TO SOU RY OR C OF G RY AT ANY / JUNCTION PT FOR LOADING GORDON GA. Cars like this went to the American-Standard plumbing fixture plant which was located along the Southern on its main line in New Orleans. SOU 32419 had a CAPY of 154,000 pounds, a LD LMT of 165,700 and a LT WT of 54,300 for a gross rail load of 220,000 pounds, and was one of 20 cars in the 32415-32434 series. |

This SHARE IN FREEDOM XL was one of 250 50-6 cars in the KCS series 110001-112496 built by Pullman-Standard at Michigan City in June-July 1967. It was photographed on the New Orleans Public Belt next to a transit shed along the Mississippi River and its data was: CAPY 188 000, LD LMT 189 400, LT WT 73 600, CU FT 5224. The Chicago & North Western subsequently purchased 150 of these and rebuilt them at its car shop in Clinton, Iowa as C&NW 164000-164149. |

The car was lettered WHEN EMPTY RETURN TO / AGENT ASHLEY DREW & NORTHERN / RAILWAY CROSSETT ARKANSAS. It had a CAPY of 140,000 pounds, a LD LMT of 149,300 and a LT WT of 70,700 for a gross rail load of 220,000. This was one of 45 cars in the AD&N 5550-5594 series, and they were later rebuilt with conventional sliding doors before moving on to the ICG, where they wore the WLO reporting mark. |

From left to right, the cars were L&N 21456, SP 597000, L&N 24999, SP 597004 and MP 8819. L&N 24999 was a 20-foot "spacer car" built in July 1965. |
