When 587 departs Wadley, the pulpwood cars on the right will be on the head-end of its train. The loaded pulpwood cars are about to be classified and the ones destined for Coosa Pines will be left here for northbound 320 to pick up later in the day. The southbound loads will be taken by 587 back to Manchester for forwarding to the various papermills located in Brunswick, Port St. Joe, Palatka, Panama City and elsewhere. |

Description: |
Sentell Spur was the usual "tie-down" location for the Lineville Road-Switcher locomotive and caboose. In previous years, a lumber mill had been located on this track which was blocked at the end by a large pile of sawdust. My grandfather, the Lineville Supervisory Agent-Operator, would get several buckets of this sawdust each spring and use it as the secret ingredient as he prepared his garden soil for planting his tomato plants !! |

Atlantic Coast Line pulpwood car #110332 and another 70 ton car await loading by Cleveland Pulpwood Yard |
Description: |
The empty pulpwood cars are located on the former Cragford House Track which has been reconfigured. Formerly, the track ran parallel to the main and siding before being curved away to enable pulpwood car loading. Normally, procedure was for the Lineville Switcher to arrive from the north (around the curve in the distance), open the woodyard switch and remove the loads, set the loads over to the main, ease backwards with the empties behind the power, cut off from the empties and roll the locomotive to a coupling with the loads, and let gravity take the empties into the clear (roll by switch) into the woodyard. Facing point switches were handled with ease and speed back in the day. When gravity failed, sticks of pulpwood would be used to move the cars into the clear in a "poling" type move that could be very dangerous if the wood wasn't sturdy enough to withstand the pressure. |

The South House Track switch is on the left, under the bridge and branches off the main track. The camera looks north in line with the siding. The track veering to the right, towards the camera, is the Sentell Spur. Just on the other side of the bridge, the tracks are the Outside Track and Cleveland Pulpwood Yard (empty woodracks visible). The Outside Track was the primary track used for picking up and setting off local cars by thru freights. It had a capacity of around 60 cars and, when necessary, could be augmented by the Hill Track and House Track |
