The Canadian Pacific's two-span pony truss bridge is an example of why the Norton-Chipman branch was powered by three 4-4-0s built in the 1880's - light axle loads were necessary. |

CP's MIXED TRAIN TO CHIPMAN |
Description: |
Canadian Pacific A2q 4-4-0 144 is ready to leave Norton's CN-CP station with the wood combine. More than half of the 44.6 mile trip was finished before some freight cars were picked-up. I was the only passenger for most of the round trip. The station is owned by the CN and shared with the CP. 144's engine house is in the background. |

CP 144 AT THE HALFWAY TANK |
Description: |
Canadian Pacific A2q 4-4-0 144 built by the CP in 1886 is taking water about half the way between Norton and Chipman. Although it is a mixed train, freight cars will not be picked-up until near the end of the 44.6 mile branch. My slide lost its color so I scanned it in B&W. |

COAL MINE SWITCHED BY CANADIAN PACIFIC 4-4-0 |
Description: |
Coal mines were major customers for the Norton-Chipman mixed train. Here Canadian Pacific A2q 4-4-0 144 picks-up a loaded hopper of coal. Before the CP lease the line was the New Brunswick Coal & Railway Co. A coal branch powered by elderly 4-4-0's is unusual to say the least. |

THE YOUNGEST SISTER - CP 4-4-0 29 AT THE BACKSHOP |
Description: |
Canadian Pacific A1e 4-4-0 29 was built by the CP's New Shops in 1887 and was the newest of the three 4-4-0's that powered the Norton-Chipman mixed train. I found her at the backshop at McAdam being fitted with a fake stack for a centennial celebration in Caribou, Maine across the border in a CP served town. Her elder sisters were handling the mixed train without her help. |
