ATSF 254C |
Description: |
CRUSHER OK March 1973 -- In this undated photo ATSF F-7A 254C rounds the curve southbound in Big Canyon just past the Dolese rock crusher operation at Crusher in Oklahoma. Getting to this location was a chore. There were two choices. First was to walk alongside the tracks with very little clearance between the tracks and the river. Second was to jump the fence at the Dolese plant. In this instance we chose the former. (Photo date approximate) |

It made it into SPSF paint but was returned to Santa Fe paint before Jan 1 1991. Upon merger Santa Fe’s merger with the BN it was renumbered to BNSF 2202. ATSF 5940 |
Description: |
NOBLE OK January 1976 -- (This photo is a victim of my sometimes inept home developing of Ektachrome but I like it anyway.) Santa Fe FP45 5940 and another cowl unit lead a mixed train west (compass south). EMD built the 5940 as ATSF 100 (s/n 33189) in Silver with red warbonnet for passenger service. In the 69-70 general renumbering it became ATSF 5940. After May 1 1970 it was reassigned to freight service. It then went through being painted blue with yellow ends before mid-1971, painted blue with yellow warbonnet and was rebuilt as SDFP45 5990 at San Bernardino CA in September 1982. It wore SPSF paint but was renumbered 100 and gained superfleet paint, was renumbered to 5990 and then to 90. It was laid up bad ordered and eventually donated to the Oklahoma Railway Museum (http://www.oklahomarailwaymuseum.org/equipment/) in Oklahoma City where it presently resides. PAULS VALLEY OK March 9 1976 -- Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation 4449 steps out with the American Ffeedom train in tow. This shot is actually taken north of Pauls Valley on U.S. 77 where the highway paralells the tracks for several miles. A great subject and a great spot for pacing. Upon comparing the two scans of this train I see this one has a Santa Fe Bicentennial unit while the earlier in the day shot does not have the diesel. My memory is firm on the locations but I might be wrong on the exact date. I do not remember the diesel being addes. Anyone out there have input on the date or the diesel? |

Oklahoma State Representative and Rock Island engineer xxxxxx was at the controls for this well-attended fan trip. The train was turned in Clinton for its return trip to El Reno. I believe the cars used for this fan trip were “camp cars.” The first car was stenciled “diner car.” |

Description: |
WEATHERFORD OK Sept 19 1976 -- Rock Island GP7 4432 leads a Central Oklahoma Railfan Club fant trip. The train is sitting in Weatherford while the crew and fans have lunch at a local restaurant. The fan trip started in El Reno and proceedd west to Clinton where lunch was planned and the train was turned. For some reason the lunch was not available so the train proceeded on its return trip to El Reno. Weatherford became a hastily arranged lunch stop. Myself and three other railfans had chased the train as far as Weatherford but stopped for lunch and let the train proceed to Clinton. We were pleasently surprised to see fans entering the restaurant and that the train was parked just outside. The tngineer for this fan trip was Jim Townsend. Jim was an Rock Island Engineer and an Oklahoma State representative. The locomotive and cars used for the trip appeared to be freshly painted. |
