ATSF 2-10-2 #3014 - Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe |
Description: |
This loco has an interesting history. In 1911, the ATSF Shops in Topeka cobbled together ten sets of 2-10-10-2 "Santa Fe Mallets" each from two 2-10-2 locos. The massive 2-10-10-2 Mallets were not sucessful so in 1915-17, the ATSF shops broke them apart into 2-10-2's. The newly formed rear half of the 2-10-10-2's were renumbered 3010-3019 while the front half were renumbered 3020-3029. This loco seen here is one of the rear half 2-10-2's made. New specs - 57" driverds, 28x32" cylinders, 200 psi boiler pressure, and produced 74,824 lb of tractive effort. The rear group weighed 293,000 lb while the front group weighed 302,490 lb. The newly rebuilt 2-10-2's were scrapped between 1939-1952. No photographer, date, or location was given for the photo. This is one of the rear halves of the split Mallet. |
