PRR 6305, AF-27, 1965 |
Description: |
17th Street. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad trains in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during August of 1965. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engine #6305, an unidentified ALCo diesel, two EMD "E" units, and engine #5878. #6305 is an AF-27 built by the American Locomotive Company in 1965 and rated at 2,700 horsepower; in this context, it is a "helper" engine. #5878 is an EP-20 built by EMD in 1949 and rated at 2,000 horsepower. They are about to pass under the 17th Street Bridge with a passenger train on their way up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Pittsburgh and points West. Partially visible in the distance are some of the PRR's 12th Street Shop buildings. This photo taken from the pedestrian stairway connecting 10th Avenue with the 17th Street Bridge. |
