LN E6A #753 - Louisville & Nashville
Title:  LN E6A #753 - Louisville & Nashville
Description:  Pulling a very short string of mismatched passenger cars is this EMD E6A unit built in July of 1942 as LN #453A. It has been repainted in the light gray & yellow scheme applied beginning in 1962. The unit lasted until being scrapped in 1970. No location was listed - does anyone recognize this spot? It could possibly be Chicago, Luisville or even Indianapolis but not sure. John H. Kuehl photo

Title:  L&N E6A 753
Description:  When this photo was taken at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal, the 753 was the last E6A still operating on the Louisville & Nashville. The locomotive had been built in June 1942 as the 453A, was renumbered 753 in 1946, was retired on 10 February 1971 and was used as trade-in credit with EMD. (approximate date of photo)

LN E6A #756 - Louisville & Nashville
Title:  LN E6A #756 - Louisville & Nashville
Description:  Typical scene as the EMD E6A unit #756 heads up a long string of varnish as it runs through the countryside. The location was not identified but it could be anywhere in Kentucky, Indiana, or any other state the L&N served. The loco was built in August of 1942 as LN #456A (serial #1626 and lasted on the roster until being scrapped in 1970. This was a Polaroid photo by Jim O'Dell photo. This is one of the first, if not the very first, Polaroid photo I have ever posted. I left it in the sepia color as it seemed appropriate for the photo.

L&N Train No. 34
Title:  L&N Train No. 34
Description:  Louisville & Nashville E6A units 757 and 772 were on train No. 34, the northbound PIEDMONT, at the railroad's station in New Orleans. The locomotives had been built in 1942 as the 457A and the 452B, and were among the last E6 units built before the War Production Board ended the construction of almost all passenger power. They were retired in March 1968 and October 1970.

Partially visible at the right is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5892, an EP-22 built by GM-EMD in April of 1950 and rated at 2,250 horsepower. Looks to me like GM-EMD rules the roost! Title:  LN E6A #770 - Louisville & Nashville
Description:  The date on this photo lists it as 8/16/1960 but it seems strange that this unit is still wearing the orignal EMD paint scheme. LN E6A #770 - Louisville & Nashville
Title:  LN E6A #770 - Louisville & Nashville
Description:  Beautiful profile captured by an unknown photographer, circa 1972, at the Kentucky Rwy Museum. According to NRHS website "Louisville & Nashville E6A diesel locomotive no. 770 was built in 1942 by the Electro Motive Division of GM. After its inaugural run from Louisville to Nashville, the locomotive regularly powered the road’s flagship passenger trains. Number 770 was retired in 1968 and donated to the Kentucky Railway Museum. One of only two surviving E6A models, no. 770 is the only L&N passenger diesel to be preserved. The rarity of the model, its 70 year-age and distinctive slanted-nose, as well as the historic L&N trains it pulled, qualifies it for the National Register of Historic Places."

LN E6A #770 - Louisville & Nashville
Title:  LN E6A #770 - Louisville & Nashville
Description:  One of 2 L&N E6A's that survived the scrap yards, it became part of the Kentucky RR Museum in July of 1968 and now is housed in New Haven, KY. The unit was originally LN #450B and wears the 1962 paint scheme of light gray and yellow. Unfortunately, I believe it has deteriorated significantly from this photo.

Description:  Looking very worn out, this EMD E6A unit was built in June of 1942 as L&N #453B a the paired set. No date was given but from the appearance, it woulld seem to be late 1950's or even eraly 1960 as the L&N were repainting the units in drab black for freight and dark blue for passenger service - a cost cutting measure but ugly. The unit was one of the last to be scrapped in 1971. No date was given for the photo. Don Dover photo

L&N No. 34
Title:  L&N No. 34
Description:  Louisville & Nashville train 34 – the northbound PIEDMONT – was preparing to leave New Orleans for New York City. The locomotives were E6A units 776 and 756; they had recently been renumbered from 456B and 456A but were still operating as a matched pair. At the other end of the station was a pedestrian overpass which ran from the end of the Canal Street streetcar line to the Mississippi River ferry boat landing on the left. It passed over the tracks of the L&N, Southern Pacific and New Orleans Public Belt. In 1950 the station was the site of the opening scene of the move A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE.
