NS Oliver Yard
This is the north end of the former Southern Railway Oliver Yard. The yard is oriented north-south, and this view is facing northwest. The building in the middle of the photo was one of the nicest diesel shops in New Orleans, and the first to be razed. It was demolished in 1991 so that the intermodal yard could be enlarged. Removal of the shop began in June 1991 and the expansion of the pigyback yard was completed in November 1992.

Bernie Feltman General I didn't know they had retired their diesel shop 11/25/2009 7:31:54 AM
Michael Palmieri General This was one of the newest and nicest diesel shops in the New Orleans area, but it never saw much use except for maintaining and inspecting locally-assigned switch engines. It was torn down in the late 1990's to make room for the expansion of the intermodal facility. 11/25/2009 8:55:10 AM
Paul Alimia General Is that track in the lower foreground the L&N bypass track? I recall you mentioning that it ran all the way down Montegut St in order to skirt the Southern property. 11/30/2009 5:28:50 PM
Michael Palmieri General Yes, that was the L&N's "new" line to the Mississippi River, built to replace the "old" line on the median of Elysian Fields Ave. which was removed in 1954. When the L&N abandoned the "new" line, this part of it was incorporated into the NS yard. 12/1/2009 9:20:58 AM
Chris Balducci General Mike, you typed that the diesel shop was removed 1991-2, but when I visited you in 1994 or 5, it was still there. 6/15/2010 2:09:25 PM
Michael Palmieri General During most of the 1990's I put out a semi-regular newsletter on Louisiana railroading, based on my personal observations and reports for other railfans. The 1991 and 1992 dates in the description came from several issues of those newsletters. 6/15/2010 2:24:45 PM
