New Haven 4425 at New Haven, Connecticut on July 20, 1976, Kodachrome by J. H. Nixon, Chuck Zeiler collection. Built in 1954 by Pullman Standard on an order for 90 coaches and a few combines, almost all were retired by 1976. The cars (nicknamed Washboards) suffered from a design flaw (stainless steel sheathing over cartbon steel) which not only trapped water causing rust and leaks, but also caused oxidation (electrolsis) between the dissimilar metals. |
