IC McKeen motor car
A postcard view at Monroe. From the postcard collection of Dale Jensen. The stone letters "M-O-N-R-O-E" are displayed in Monroe at the former Milwaukee Road depot, now the "National Historic Cheesemaking Center" along Highway 69.

Andre Wehrle General Very neat glimpse at what passenger "trains" were like on this branch. Your history in the heading of the album is interesting and mostly correct, but the line was not removed until 1999 at least from Monroe north. WICT embargoed it apart from a small amount of local service in the Monroe and Madison areas in the early '90s. The last runs to service Brunsell Lumber on the southwest side of Madison were made sometime in 1997, and the track lay out of service and overgrown for two more years before finally being pulled. 1/16/2018 9:16:11 AM
Andre Wehrle General Ultimately I think the rehabiliation of the ex-MILW lines from Chicago to Janesville to Madison was what did this line in. Due to the MILW's troubles during the CM&N days, this line probably handled a lot of traffic to and from Madison and Janesville that would otherwise have gone via the MILW. WICT finally achieved the dream of reopening the Chicago link, and ironically the improvement in fortunes for the ex-MILW lines was probably the final death knell for this line. 1/16/2018 9:21:43 AM
