PRR 5838, EP-22, 1965
Sunday. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 02 May 1965. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #6309, #5861, #5860-B, and #5838. #6309 is an AF-27 built by the American Locomotive Company in 1965 and rated at 2,700 horsepower; it is the "helper" engine in this context. #5861 and #5860-B are EP-20's built by EMD in 1948 and rated at 2,000 horsepower each. #5838 is an EP-22 built by EMD in 1951 and rated at 2,250 horsepower. They are passing under the 24th Street Bridge with a 13-car westbound passenger train, and are heading up the Allegheny Mountains to Pittsburgh and points West. This photo taken from the steps of SLOPE Tower.
