Two 1964 CB&Q Line-ups Explained  Contributor's Pick!
Line-ups tell railroads personnel, e.g., maintainers, tower operators, and section crews, what trains to expect in the next few hours. They were dictated by dispatchers or tower operators over the company phone line for sections of track at about the same times each day. The Line-up at the left was for July 10, 1964 and was taken by the Operator (Bernard) at Prescott, Wisc. at 11:51 AM for trains between North LaCrosse and St. Croix Tower (where the joint CB&Q and Milwaukee Road trackage to St. Paul began) between 11:55 AM and 4:01 PM. Eastbound Extra 206 (206 was a GP7) was listed first, then trains 82 and 80, regular through freights, 82 was ordered for Daytons Bluff (the St. Paul freight yard) at 12:45 PM and 80 was annulled. #24 was the Afternoon Zephyr (no time was given because it was scheduled). Westbound shows the Way Freight (local in CB&Q jargon) West was reported out of Treviness at 10:40 AM, the weed sprayer again, and #21, The Morning Zephyr. The August 19, 1964 Line-up was taken by the operator (Bernard) at Milledgeville for trains between Aurora and Savanna Tower that morning. (Milledgeville is between Aurora and Savanna). It was issued by Savanna Tower. Westbound trains are listed first starting with The Morning Zephyr. The Rockford Way Freight was at Rochelle (226 was a GP7), another GP7 (#225) was working between Stewart Jct. and Flag Center, the Oregon Way Freight was ordered out of Eola at 6:30 AM, and through freight #97 ordered Chicago (Clyde) at 9 AM. That morning saw #48 (combined Blackhawk and Mainstreeter) past Shabbona at 5:35 AM, #26 (North Coast Limited) and #32 (Empire Builder) running separately (the scheduled 15 min. apart; in winter they ran combined with The Morning Zephyr; note, this day The Morning Zephyr would pass Savanna Tower after 12:01PM and would appear on the afternoon line-up). The Pick-up was the name of a local freight (often three diesels and 80 cars) this day with #136D, an F3A, leading was at Polo when the line-up was dictated. Freight #88 with a GP20 leading was ordered out of Savanna at about 7:45 AM.
