Description: |
FM. Here is an image of a photo by Fred McLeod that was taken near Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, on 9 October 1949. Shown here (L to R) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4597 and another locomotive whose road number is not recorded. #4597 is an I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S during September of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in May of 1936, and retired in November of 1951 after 28 years of service. In this context, they're pulling a mixed-cargo freight train up the Allegheny Mountains, and are about to pass through one of the Gallitzin tunnels on their way West to Pitcairn. This image comes from a B&W slide set entitled "Horseshoe Curve, Pennsylvania Railroad" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa. William E. Burket Collection. |
