Here is page ten of an 18-page article by W.R. Osborne entitled "Greatest Show On Earth: New York Division, P.R.R." It was published originally in the January 1942 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 17. Partial Caption: "Engine 4726 is of the P-5a classification, and in this photo is rolling a scheduled fast freight westward near Colonia, N.J., 12.9 miles west of Newark on the busiest part of the New York Division." Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4726 is a P-5A (2-C-2) built by Baldwin-Westinghouse during December of 1932, rated at 3,750 horsepower, and retired in May of 1963 after 31 years of faithful service. |

Meadows. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Al Chione that was taken at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Engine Service Tracks at Meadows Yard near Kearny, New Jersey, on 19 September 1953. The photographer is not identified. Prominent here is PRR engine #4726, a P-5A (2-C-2) built by Baldwin-Westinghouse during December of 1932, rated at 3,750 horsepower, and retired in May of 1963. Two more PRR locomotives are also visible here. At the far left is #4747, a P-5A (Modified) built by Baldwin-Westinghouse in March of 1935, rated at 3,750 horsepower, and retired in April of 1962. At the far right is #4806, a GG-1 built by General Electric in June of 1935 and rated at 4,620 horsepower. ("Stoneborobranch"; #12 of 32) |
