Description: |
The New Orleans Regional Transit Authority’s brand-new home-made streetcar 2002 was stopped at the outer end of the ST. CHARLES car line while undergoing 100 miles of testing. The car had just been built at the RTA’s CARROLLTON STATION, while car 945 had been built by the Perley A. Thomas Car Works in 1924. The 2000-series cars were built for service on the new CANAL STREET car line, and have been used on other new lines. |

CN-IC Track |
Description: |
In late 2002 the Canadian National removed the last vestiges of the former Illinois Central inbound and outbound main lines just north of New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. These two lines had been severed at the New Orleans city limit in early 1954, when the IC began using NOUPT; but remained in place to serve various freight customers. These businesses gradually switched to truck, relocated or closed; and in 2000 the last customer, the Blue Plate Mayonnaise plant at the corner of South Jefferson Davis Parkway and Earhart Boulevard, shut down after production moved to Knoxville. In this view, a pair of ICG gondolas were collecting ties along Earhart Boulevard near South Gayoso Street. |

It was closed on 10 August 1972, but survived Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and was still standing in 2022. The track on the right is the beginning of the ST. LOUIS STREET LINE, which was once the main line to the Southern Railway’s TERMINAL STATION on Basin Street at Canal Street; while the construction on the left was for the First Baptist Church, which was being built on former railroad property. Stored Power |
Description: |
By the time this photo was taken Amtrak had retired most of its E and F units, and stored many of its remaining older locomotives. Here are six of the surviving older engines stored at the New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal coach yard: E8Am 436, E9A 419, FP7A's 493 and 492, and E8A's 368 and 353. The 436 was built in May 1952 as Illinois Central 4029, and was upgraded by the IC into E10 2021 in February 1969. Amtrak bought it in February 1973, and it was the only IC unit purchased by Amtrak. The 419 was built in December 1963 as Union Pacific 419, and it had the distinction of being the last E-unit ever constructed. Both of these units were scrapped at NOUPT by Precision National Corp. in 1982.The 493 and 492 were two of 14 FP7's acquired from the Southern Pacific, and the last two in existence. Originally SP 6454 and 6453, they became Amtrak 117 and 116 in July 1972, were renumbered 377 and 376 in April 1976, and renumbered to 493 and 492 in July 1977. Both were retired in May 1980 and sold to Precision National Corp. for scrap. E8A 368 was built in August 1950 as UP 929. It was subsequently Amtrak 326, 438, 368 and 469 before being retired in June 1981 and sold to PNC. E8A 353 was built in October 1953 as Baltimore & Ohio 26A and was renumbered B&O 1447 in 1957. It wore Amtrak numbers 203, 353 and 467 before being retired. |

L&N E7A 780 |
Description: |
It's Saturday 1 May 1971, and at midnight Amtrak had taken over or eliminated almost all of the country's long distance passenger trains. Louisville & Nashville E7A's 779 and 780 had just brought the very last L&N passenger train into New Orleans, and were resting at the NOUPT sand tower. In a couple of hours, they would back into the station and then leave with all of the L&N's passenger cars that were still there. |

A trio of freshly-painted Seaboard System U-Boats - U33B 5624 and U36B's 5773 and 5752 - power an eastbound United States Lines stack train towards the railroad's Gentilly Yard on the east side of New Orleans. The train originated on the Missouri Pacific in Houston as train XHOAV and is bound for Savannah, Georgia. At Gentilly Yard it will become SBD train 202. SBD - and later CSX - power usually ran all the way from Savannah to Houston and then back to New Orleans, where the locomotives would be replaced by freshly-serviced units. The train was discontinued in late 1986 after U.S. Lines entered bankruptcy. |

Description: |
We're on the Southern Railway BACK BELT at Frenchman Street where the brakeman on SP train AXAVT had just "pulled the pin" and was signaling for his engineer to pull ahead. The AXAVT was one of the country's earliest dedicated stack trains; and when this photo was taken, it was one of the few then in operation. It ran from the Port of Long Beach to New Orleans, and handled American President Line containers exclusively, mostly on blue APLX cars. In this view, the cars were being delivered to the Southern Railway for delivery to their destination in Atlanta as a part of train No. 222. The locomotives were GP38-2 4802, GP35 6593, GP38-2 4830 and GP35M 4160. |

Bump |
Description: |
On a foggy morning in October low-nose SP GP9 3712 pushes the ICG's New Orleans wreck train into the West High Curve of the Huey P. Long Bridge. Just beyond the wrecker, and on the opposite track, is SP GP9E 3387 and - sticking up in the air - SP caboose 1274. The 1274 was on the rear of a westbound train that was stuck on the bridge behind an MP train. For some reason, the MP could not take their train into their yard; so the SP decided to send some engines over from the east side of the river and pull their train back off of the bridge. Anyhow, it was a dark and foggy night, and SP 3387 coupled into the 1274 just a little too hard, causing it to jack-knief like this; and now the ICG wrecker has come to make things right! |

Two sets of light power wait on the Norfolk Southern BACK BELT for a route through East Bridge Junction. Both sets are probably headed to their respective yards at Avondale, at the west end of the Huey P. Long Bridge. SP MP15AC's 2702 and 2703 are returning from the Norfolk Southern's Oliver Yard, while MP 3291, UP 4277, MP 3125 and UP 3265 -- all SD40-2's -- are on their way back from the CSX's Gentilly Yard. SP 2702 and 2703 were the very first MP15AC units built by EMD, and the first dozen of these began their careers in south Louisiana. Although initially operated in cab-to-cab sets, nose-to-nose operation was later adopted. |

Fair Train |
Description: |
Almost every Friday during the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition the Union Pacific ran a special passenger train from Houston to a siding at the fair site in New Orleans. It's 4:35 and one of the Fair Trains nears the end of its trip, operating over the New Orleans Public Belt behind Audubon Park. This is a typical example, with MP GP50 3515 and ex-Rock Island GP40 612, staff car CABARTON, sleeper OMAHA, lounge car 6203, and office car 102. The photo was taken from the Mississippi River levee. |

The New U.P. |
Description: |
It was a couple of years after the 1982 MP-WP-UP merger before Union Pacific and Western Pacific locomotives became common on the Missouri Pacific around New Orleans, so it was a real treat to find units from all three roads outside the diesel shop at Avondale yard. From left to right are WP GP40 3531 (with UP SD45 No. 21), UP SD40-2 3785, and MP GP38-2's 2166 and 2205. |

NOPSI 954 |
Description: |
This photo was taken at the outer end of New Orleans Public Service's St. Charles Line, on South Carrollton Avenue at South Claiborne. Car 954 was just beginning its trip to the Central Business District. Tulane Route AM General bus 438 would also be going to the CBD, but via a different direction. In the background, car 907 was moving up to take the 954's place at the end of the line. Car 962 was already at the bumper, but the motorman hadn't yet reversed its poles for the inbound trip back to Canal Street. |
