SP 4-6-0 #2248 - Southern Pacific
Title:  SP 4-6-0 #2248 - Southern Pacific
Description:  Before joining ALCO, the Cooke Locomotive and Machine Shop built this ten-wheeler for Southern Pacific as their #2248. It arrived on July 10,1896. In 1901, it was renumbered SP 2248. The loco was leased to the P.F.E between 3/15/1945 to 3/10/1949. In 1961, SP sold it for scrap to the Purdy Co but Purdy resold it to the Texas State Ry as their #200 by way of C.T. Brown, thus saving it from the scrapper's torch. In 1976, Grapevine Vintage Railroad (GVRR) purchased the loco for its excursion trains. It even nicknamed it "Puffy".Since early 2016, the 2248 has been out of service. It is unclear of the current restoration status of if & when 2248 returns to service. This is an Elroy Griffin photo.

Description:  Interesting aerial view of part of the Southern Pacific Roseville Yard damaged by an explosion on April 28, 1973. The press release from Pacific Press and UPI reads as follows "ROSEVILLE, CALF: Utter devastation remains of both this section of Southern Pacific yards here, and area beyond (top) where trees are stripped of all foliage. A string of railroad boxcars carrying nearly 1,00,000 lbs of bombs exploded one after another, forcing evacuation of 40,000 to 50,000 residents of the area from their homes and injuring dozens of persons." The yard is now Union Pacific's massive J.R. Davis Yard.
