Western Coal & Coke 4-6-0 ten wheeler #1 was built by the Montreal Locomotive Works in December of 1913 to pull coal trains on branchlines in and out of the Beaver Mines in Alberta, Canada. It was retired from revenue service in 1964, and it was subsequently purchased by the Mid-Continent Railway Museum, which subsequently used it to pull their tourist trains. As of 2025, it is undergoing restoration to operating condition. No date or photographer was listed for this photo which is now part of my rr collection. |

Here is another view of the powerful and fast Wheeling & Lake Erie 2-8-4 Berkshire #6426 (serial #70024, class K-1) built by Alco-Schenectady in July of 1942. After the Nickel Plate Road took control of the WLE in 1949, the loco was renumbered NKP #826 (class S-4) in 1952. Like other 2-8-4's, NKP #826 was "laid up" (retired) at Brewster, OH in October of 1956 and then sold for scrap to the Canton Iron & Metals Company in February of 1963 after serving for only 14 years total on the WLE & NKP rosters. Specs - 69" drivers, impressive 245 psi boiler pressure, 25x34" cylinders, engine wt of 415,000 lb and tractive force of 64,100 lb. Unfortunately, no date, location or photographer was listed for this photo now in my rr collection. An approximate location and date were used for posting. |

Partially visible here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #3554, an H-9S (2-8-0) "Consolidated" built in Juniata as H-8B number "6605" during November of 1911, renumbered "3554" in 1913, rebuilt as an H-9S in February of 1917, and retired in September of 1949 after 38 years of faithful service.
